Universal Design is the epitome of the classic design ideal “form follows function.”

Many simple solutions can be seamlessly incorporated into our homes. When planning a remodeling project or renovation, consider integrating Universal Design features. When choosing products, look for ergonomically designed items, making ordinary tasks much easier and incorporating safety.

EXTERIOR

The universal design opportunities are to integrate features such as ease of access, accommodations for enjoyment of outdoor living, gardening activities, landscaping, upgraded lighting solutions, stone and water features, exercise, pool and water therapy areas. The exterior and landscape are ideally designed from the inside-out, so to speak, because most people spend in excess of 90% of their time inside. Consequently, locating outdoor features for enjoyment from the inside is crucial; i.e. design from the inside-out. There are also opportunities for indoor modifications to enhance the nurturing indoor/ outdoor connection to nature.

ROUND THE HOUSE:

1. Mount light switches at a lower height that can be operated from a seated position.
2. Use rocker panel light switches instead of standard small toggle switches.
3. Minimize changes in floor level. Every step can be a potential tripping hazard or future issue for navigation.
4. Consider a first floor master bedroom which is ideal for life-span living.
5. Avoid mounting items on the wall that protrude from the wall surface.
6. Install pulls instead of knobs on cabinetry.
7. Provide high level and high quality lighting. Use dimmers for flexibility in lighting level. Maximize views to the outdoors and natural light for the uplifting psychological effect.
